Located in Monmouth County, Matawan is a borough encompassing around 2.4 square miles, currently home to a population of more than 8,800 residents. The borough is part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, a development effort by nine municipalities focused on reinvigorating the economy of northern Monmouth County and preserving the Raritan Bayshore coastline.
Matawan was established in 1686 by Scottish Presbyterians, and was initially part of Middletown Point’s shipping settlement. In the 1800’s, the area’s economy was fueled mostly by two tile factories, two piano factories, a basket factory, and a lime kiln which refined oyster shells collected from the nearby borough of Keyport.
Matawan consists of a number of residential communities that are defined by the borough’s two lakes, Matawan and Lefferts. The borough is conveniently located close to major highways, including Routes 9 and 35, Turnpike, and Parkway. Many residents enjoy a wide variety of recreational opportunities like fishing and canoeing on the borough’s two lakes.
